Baseball Falls 8-0 to Winthrop in Big South Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team opened Big South Conference play at home Friday afternoon, hosting Winthrop at Greenwood Field. The Eagles claimed the conference-opener 8-0 off 14 hits.
Winthrop (8-10, 1-0 Big South) scored two runs in the top of the first and fifth innings and finished things off with three runs in the seventh and a solo run in the eighth.
Chris Troost, Joe Tietjen, Danny Wilson and Joe Gruszka all notched hits for UNC Asheville (7-9, 0-1 Big South). In the field, Wilson led the Bulldogs with eight putouts and three assists at first base, including an impressive diving catch and throw to get a double play, ending the Eagle threat in the top of the second inning.
Freshman Brandon Harris (2-1) started the game on the mound for UNC Asheville and pitched 5.1 innings to be the pitcher of record. Reece Green (2-1) pitched the first eight innings for Winthrop, striking out six batters while giving up just four hits. Daniel Willcutt came on to pitch the final inning and secured the shutout.

UNC Asheville and Winthrop will continue the three-game Big South Conference series tomorrow, Saturday, March 18, with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The series finale will be Sunday, March 19, featuring a 1 p.m. first pitch.
