ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis squad fell to the Davidson Wildcats, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Doubles play began with No. 1-seeded Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley falling to the Wildcats' top pair of Samantha Armas and Megan Scholvinck, 6-2. The Bulldogs' No. 2, Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele, lost to Anna Feaster and Ally Sexton, 7-5. On court No. 3, Hunter Hall and Amalie Davidsen were defeated by Ava Todd and Alexandra Abele, 7-5.
The Bulldogs' No. 1 Francisco lost to Scholvinck in straight sets, 6(0)-7, 7-5. No. 2 Watson-Steele also fell, 6-4, 7-5 to Feaster. Court No. 3 saw Shipley defeat Gabrielle Centenari, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Â At No 4, Davidsen lost to Abele, 6-3, 6-1. The Bulldogs' No. 5 Louw was topped by Todd, 6-3, 6-1. No. 6 Hall finished off the day with a victory for the Bulldogs against Armas, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
BULLDOG BITES
QUITE THE PAIR: The No. 1 pairing of sophomores Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley have had a stellar start to the season. The pair is now 4-2 on the year after today's loss to Davidson's top twosome.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lauren Watson-Steele was named the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week earlier this year for her standout performance to open the season. The freshman from Cambridgeshire, England, is 4-2 in singles play and is also 3-3 in doubles.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will continue their homestand against Western Carolina at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Asheville Racquet Club.
