Baseball Picks Up 12-6 Win Over Dayton
02.24.2017 | Baseball
As the visiting team in the neutral-site game, the Bulldogs (2-3) benefitted from batting first, putting a run up on the board in the top of the first when senior Joe Tietjen grounded out to shortstop but gave freshman Chris Troost enough time to bolt for home. The freshman designated hitter got on earlier in the frame via a single to left-center field and moved to third when Brandon Lankford doubled to center field.
The Flyers (1-3) put up a two-spot in the bottom of the inning, but Asheville responded with five runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Kole Harris got the scoring started with an RBI single to center field, scoring Danny Wilson who singled earlier in the frame. After Carmine Pagano and Troost both drew walks to load the bases, Lankford singled to score Harris. With the bases still loaded, Tietjen sent a rocket of a double to left field, clearing the other three runners from the base paths and setting the score at 6-2.
Dayton put a single run up in the fourth, but the Bulldogs responded again with three runs when Teitjen hit a homer to center field, scoring Troost and Lankford, giving him seven RBIs on the day, just two shy of the individual single-game school record of nine. Asheville added another run in the top of the fifth when freshman first baseman Jake Madole wore a pitch with two out and bases loaded, pushing Troost across the plate for his third run of the day.
The Flyers managed to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Asheville pushed another two runs across in the top of the sixth to set the final score at the final 12-6. Andrew Friedholm made it home on a beautiful bunt by Carmine Pagano that also allowed the sophomore shortstop to reach base safely and then Harris raced home on a wild pitch.
Both Lankford and Tietjen finished the game with two hits each. Troost led all scorers with four runs scored and also drew three walks while Lankford and Harris both scored twice. Tietjen recorded his seven RBIs on a force-out, a double and his three-run homer.
For Dayton, both Pat Meehan and Connor Echols went 3-for-4 at the plate with Echols scoring twice, matching Nick Ryan who also scored a pair of runs.
Freshman left-hander Greg Gasparro earned the second start of his short career and pitched 4.1 innings and struck out four batters, but did not earn the decision. Fellow freshman Brandon Harris earned his first win of the season in 4.2 innings of relief that saw the right-hander scatter three hits while giving up no runs.
Dayton was forced to utilize seven pitchers Friday afternoon after starter Austin Cline (0-2) pitched just 2.0 while giving up six earned runs.

QUOTABLES
"We played well defensively, had quality at-bats throughout the lineup and Brandon Harris did a great job in relief for Greg Gasparro. If you do those three things, it gives you a chance to win." - Scott Friedholm
