Bulldog Baseball Falls 25-9 to James Madison

The Dukes scored four runs in the top of the first, 10 in the top of the third, six in the sixth, two in the ninth and single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, Justin Woods added to his week's RBI total with a bases-loaded double that scored Carmine Pagano, Chris Troost and Brandon Lankford. Earlier in the week, Woods recorded four RBIs with his first career grand slam on Wednesday, Feb. 22, against USC Upstate.
In the fifth inning, Lankford and Woods both went yard with similar two-run home runs, giving Woods nine RBIs since Wednesday. The bombs were the second of the season for both the senior outfielder and the freshman third baseman. Troost scored on Lankford's homer to left field and Joe Tietjen scored on Woods' shot to center field.
The final scoring for the Bulldogs came in the bottom of the seventh. Derek Smith was walked with bases loaded and pushed Tanner Bush across the plate and Pagano followed suit by getting hit by a pitch to score Jake Madole.
Both Pagano and Woods registered two hits in the game. Pagano went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Woods went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and one run scored. Woods also drew two walks.
On the mound, redshirt sophomore right-hander Ryan Tapp (0-2) started the game for UNC Asheville and pitched 2.2 innings en route to being the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs. Also pitching for the Bulldogs were Austin Fahr, Blake Brown, Nick Boyles and Jesse Juday. Cam Vassar (1-0) clinched the win on the mound with 2.0 innings of work that saw him give up just one run compared to five strikeouts. Colton Harlow started the game for the Dukes but earned a no-decision after pitching the first four innings.
BULLDOG BITES
FRESHMAN CARRYING THE LOAD: Five of the Bulldogs' nine runs were scored by freshmen, Saturday afternoon. Both Chris Troost and Brandon Lankford scored two runs while Jake Madole added one himself.
MOVING RUNNERS ACROSS THE PLATE: Since Wednesday's game at USC Upstate, senior Justin Woods has batted in nine runners with two home runs and one double. He has 11 total bases and is currently batting .333 on the week with a pair of runs scored.
UP NEXT
Asheville will close out the weekend in Spartanburg tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 26, with a game against Wofford. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Terriers is slated for 4 p.m.
