ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis team opened Big South Conference play with a 6-1 loss to the Liberty Flames on Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

Liberty started the competition off strong, sweeping doubles play. The Bulldogs' No. 1-seeded pair of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley were defeated by Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko, 6-3. Court No. 2 saw Asheville's Hunter Hall and Lauren Watson-Steele fall to Anna Dollar and Evangeline Crist, 6-3. The doubles competition concluded with the Bulldogs' No. 3 pairing of Christin Louw and Emily Sidor dropping a 6-3 decision to Mariely Hassey and Eugenia Camacho.

Despite dropping the first set, Asheville's No. 1 Francisco topped Anderson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in an exciting and hard-fought match. Liberty then went on to take the No. 2-6 singles slots. No. 2 Shipley fell to Dollar, 6-2, 6-4. On court No. 3 Watson-Steele took the first set, but was bested by Panchenko, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. At the No. 4 singles slot, Louw lost to Crist, 6-4, 6-0. No. 5 Hall was beaten by Camacho, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 6 seeded freshman, Sidor, experienced her first defeat of the season, losing a 6-2, 6-0, match to Hassey.
