ASHEVILLE, N.C.— The UNC Asheville women's tennis team rallied from behind to top the Mountaineers of Appalachian State, 5-2, at the Asheville Racquet Club on Sunday afternoon.

Appalachian State took the early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Doubles play began with the No. 1 pairing of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley topping Appalachian State's Gabrielle Wreder and Megan Mullen, 6-3. On court No. 3, Hunter Hall and Amalie Davidsen fell to Melissa Machado and Rebecca Morse, 6-0. The Bulldogs' No. 2, Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele against the Mountaineers' Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan did not get underway as Appalachian State had already clinched the doubles point.

The Bulldogs early season singles play success continued in the win over Appalachian State as they won five of the six singles matches. Ashevilles' No. 1 Francisco defeated Morse in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. No. 2 Watson-Steele won a thrilling three setter over Wreder, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Court No. 3 saw Shipley down Heidi, 6-3, 6-2.  At No 4, Davidsen fell to Machado, in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. The Bulldogs' No. 5 Louw beat Bygrave, 6-2, 6-3.  No. 6 Hall finished off the day with a perfect straight set win over Anthony, 6-2, 6-2.

BULLDOG BITES
PRESEASON PICKS: Asheville was picked fifth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular-season in sixth place and took that seed into the Big South Tournament where they fell in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina.

SEASONED DOGS: Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster boasts three upperclassmen, two seniors and one junior. The Bulldogs will look to their experience on the roster to overcome a challenging Big South Conference schedule this spring.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will next travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UNCG at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
