Women's Tennis Picks Up Dominating Win Over Mars Hill

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis responded from its first loss of the year with a clean 7-0 sweep over Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Asheville took the early 1-0 lead, sweeping all three doubles matches. Doubles play began with the No. 1 pairing of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley topping Jasha Geerdink and Jade Hart, 6-2. No. 2 Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele battled to a 7-5 win over Evan Lake and Jade Henke. On court No. 3, Hunter Hall and Amalie Davidsen swept Sophia Pelaez and Hannah Hill, 6-0.
The Bulldogs continued to show their dominance in singles play with a 6-0 singles sweep, not dropping a set along the way. Asheville's No. 1 Francisco defeated Lake, 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 Watson-Steele followed with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Hart. Court No. 3 saw Shipley down Geerdink 6-4, 7-5. At No 4, Davidsen topped Henke, 6-3, 6-1. The Bulldogs' No. 5 Louw beat Pelaez, 6-3, 6-0. No. 6 Hall finished off the afternoon with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Dani Potts.

PRESEASON PICKS:Â Asheville was picked fifth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular-season in sixth place and took that seed into the Big South Tournament where they fell in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina.
SEASONED DOGS:Â Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster boasts three upperclassmen, two seniors and one junior. The Bulldogs will look to their experience on the roster to overcome a challenging Big South Conference schedule this spring.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will be back in action at the Asheville Racquet Club, tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 29, to host Appalachian State at 3 p.m.
