ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis squad fell to Central Arkansas in a close 5-2 loss Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racuqet Club.
Play began with the doubles competition, which involved two tie-breaks. After falling behind two games to nil on court No. 1, Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley rallied to take six straight games to a 6-2 victory. On court three, Amalie Davidsen and Hunter Hall also rallied back from 0-5 to force a tiebreak, only to fall short, 7-6, to QiLi Ma and Rada Manataweewat. In the decisive match on court No. 2, Christin Louw and Lauren Watson Steele defeated Hee-Jin Oh and Marli Van Heerden, 7-6, to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, No. 1 Francisco fell to Pramethong 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Central Arkansas battled back with No. 2 Shimoguchi downing Shipley in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Asheville's No. 3, Watson Steele topped Oh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Central Arkansas continued to battle taking the following three courts, with No. 4 Ma beating Louw, 6-3, 7-5. No. 5 Hardeen then defeated Davidsen 6-4, 6-4 and No. 6 Hall fell to Mantaweewat, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0.

PRESEASON PICKS:Â Asheville was picked fifth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular-season in sixth place and took that seed into the Big South Tournament where they fell in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina.
SEASONED DOGS:Â Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster boasts three upperclassmen, two seniors and one junior. The Bulldogs will look to their experience on the roster to overcome a challenging Big South Conference schedule this spring.
