ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis squad blanked Lenoir-Rhyne, 7-0, to win their season opener Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Bulldogs will continue their opening weekend with a match against Central Arkansas on Sunday, Jan. 15, beginning at 3 p.m. The match will also be held at the Asheville Racquet Club.

The afternoon began with the Bulldogs sweeping the doubles competition. On the No. 1 courts, Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley shut out Julia Ponomareva and Sara Kalenova, 6-0. On the No. 2 court, Lauren Watson Steel and Christin Louw defeated Emily Murchland and Taylor Fredrickson, 6-1. The Bulldogs' Hunter Hall and Amalie Davidsen completed the doubles sweep on the No. 3 court with their win over Augilar Camillo and Marta Funes, 6-2.

Asheville continued their dominance by sweeping all of the singles competitions as well. No. 1 Hannah Francisco downed Ponomareva, 6-3, 6-1, while No. 5 Amalie Davidsen did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Taylor Fredrickson. Both No. 2 Kylee Shipley and No. 4 Christin Louw rallied from one set down to win their matches in a decisive third.

BULLDOG BITES
PRESEASON PICKS: Asheville was picked fifth overall in the 2017 Big South Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs finished the 2016 regular-season in sixth place and took that seed into the Big South Tournament where they fell in the quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina.

CLEAN SWEEPS: The Bulldogs swept every event on the courts today, only dropping two singles sets.  Davidsen also pulled off a near perfect sweep, not dropping one game in her singles victory.

SEASONED DOGS: Coming into the 2017 season, Asheville's roster boasts three upperclassmen, two seniors and one junior. The Bulldogs will look to their experience on the roster to overcome a challenging Big South Conference schedule this spring.

UP NEXT: Following play Sunday, the Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 28, by hosting Mars Hill at the Asheville Racquet Club, beginning at 3 p.m.
