FARMVILLE, VA – Visiting UNC Asheville left nine men on base, including five over the first three innings alone, as Longwood used a four-run third inning to hand the Bulldogs a 6-3 loss Monday afternoon in Big South Conference action.

 

THE TURNING POINT

Trailing 2-1, Longwood connected for back-to-back two-out, two run doubles in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good, after Asheville had multiple chances to add runs over its first three at-bats, stranding two runners in the opening two innings and a single runner in the third.

 

NOTABLES

-The middle of Asheville's order – Joe Tietjen, Danny Wilson and Justin Woods – each tallied two hits, with Teitjen, Woods and Pete Guy driving in the Bulldog runs.

 

-Guy opened the game with his 51st walk of the season in the top of the first inning to stay within one of the national leaders, while running his on-base streak to 30 consecutive games.

 

-Bulldog starter Jordan Fulbright was saddled with his fourth loss of the season, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks over three innings of work.

 

-Guy walked, stole third base and scored in the first inning on Tietjen's two-out single to give the Bulldogs the early lead before Longwood responded with a single run of its own via a two-out Asheville error in the bottom of the second.

 

-The Bulldogs took the lead for the second time in the game on Woods' two-out single to plate Tietjen in the top of the third inning before Longwood's four runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. The hosts added a single run in the fourth on an RBI groundout before Asheville cut into the lead via Guy's RBI single in the sixth.

 

-The sixth inning saw Asheville put the opening two runners of the inning on and had a chance for a big inning before Longwood pitchers picked off two Bulldog base runners in the frame. Asheville stranded two final base runners in the seventh before going down in order over the final two frames of the afternoon.

 

UP NEXT

-Following today's loss, the Bulldogs return home for five games, beginning with midweek games against Furman (Tuesday) and UNC Greensboro (Wednesday), both with 6:00 p.m. first pitches. Asheville then hosts Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb over the weekend, with Senior Day activities taking place prior to Saturday afternoon's game.
