FARMVILLE, VA – Longwood used three straight two-out base hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good, handing visiting UNC Asheville a 7-4 loss in Big South Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

THE TURNING POINT
In that sixth inning for Longwood, the Lancers stole a pair of bases to set themselves up in position to score on the hits after having a runner on first base with two outs. Longwood tied the game on an infield single before back-to-back hits into left field pushed the lead to two runs.
NOTABLES
-Carmine Pagano finished with two of Asheville's nine hits, including a two-run homer that gave the Bulldogs the lead at the time in the top of the third inning. Five of the Bulldogs' nine total hits were for extra-bases, as Pete Guy, Joe Tietjen, Alex Baratta and Derek Smith all tallied doubles.
-Guy's double pushed his on-base streak up to 29 consecutive games.
-Reliever Tyler Hughes was saddled with the loss, being tagged with all three runs in the sixth as he went just 2/3 of an inning as Longwood took the lead.
-Longwood left more men on base (12) than Asheville (9), with the Bulldogs leaving three men on base in the top of the first and one runner to end the third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth frames.
-Longwood took the lead in the bottom of the first on C.J. Roth's leadoff home run before Asheville answered and took the lead in the top of the third inning on Pagano's two-run homer down the left field line.
-A two-out RBI single tied the game for Longwood in the bottom of the fourth before the hosts took the lead in the fifth on another two-out RBI single.
-Asheville tied and took the lead in the top of the sixth, beginning with Teitjen's leadoff double before he scored on a wild pitch followed by Baratta's two-out RBI double later in the frame to give the Bulldogs the lead.
-The bottom of the sixth for Longwood gave the hosts the lead for good with three-consecutive two-out, run scoring hits before the Lancers added a final run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single.
-Asheville notched a pair of two-out singles in the seventh and eighth, but the best chance for the Bulldogs came in the ninth inning. Smith opened the frame with his double before Guy was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to force a pitching change for Longwood. The Lancers induced a popup by Pagano for the first out of the inning before a groundball double play ended the afternoon.
UP NEXT
-Following today's loss, the Bulldogs and Longwood conclude the series at 1:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Asheville then returns home for five games, beginning with midweek games against Furman (Tuesday) and UNC Greensboro (Wednesday) before hosting Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb beginning Friday night.
