Bulldogs Earn Third-Straight Midweek Victory

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Visiting UNC Asheville plated seven runs over the first four innings Tuesday afternoon on the way to grabbing its third consecutive midweek victory, as the Bulldogs posted a 8-0 win at Western Carolina to win their third consecutive game in the mountain rivalry.
THE TURNING POINT
Leading by two after the opening frame, freshman Andrew Friedholm connected on a two-out grand slam over the left field wall to push the Bulldogs out to the comfortable advantage. Asheville connected for three total homers – also getting solo homers from Joe Tietjen and Danny Wilson – in the win.
NOTABLES
-The Bulldogs finished with seven total hits, including two each from Tietjen and Wilson, while Scott Kobos added an RBI base hit and Lucas Owens notched the final hit of the afternoon.
-Pete Guy finished with three walks to up his season total to 46 base on balls as he retook the national lead in the category. The walks also extend Guy's reached base streak to 23 consecutive games.
-As the starter, Wilson earned his second win of the season, tossing the first two innings as part of a seven pitcher staff day for the Bulldogs.
-Asheville jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning via RBI singles from Wilson and Kobos before loading the bases in the top third and putting the game away with Friedholm's two-out grand slam.
-Tietjen continued the homer parade in the top of the fourth, sending his no doubt home run over the 20-foot wall down the left field line. Wilson got into the home run act in the top of the seventh, connecting for a solo shot to left-center field for the final run of the afternoon.
-The Bulldog pitchers held Western Carolina to just two hits, holding the hosts hitless until the bottom of the fourth as the Catamounts recorded just five total base runners. Asheville pitchers recorded just four strikeouts – two each from Zach Greene and Corey Randall – but did not walk a batter as a staff and hit just one batter (by Wilson in the bottom of the first).
-Asheville has now won four of its last five games overall in addition to three consecutive midweek contests.
UP NEXT
-Following today's win, the Bulldogs return home to Greenwood Field for a three-game weekend series with Winthrop beginning on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. before continuing the series Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and wrapping up with a 1:00 p.m. Sunday start.
