ASHEVILLE, N.C. – For the second day in a row, UNC Asheville saw its starting pitcher turn in a brilliant, eight inning performance as the bats tallied the same amount of runs and the Bulldogs took game two of the weekend series over Mt. St. Mary's by a 8-2 score Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
THE TURNING POINT
The Bulldogs posted six runs in the opening three innings, more than enough support for sophomore left-hander Jordan Fulbright, who struck out six batters and allowed seven hits over his eight-inning performance to earn his second win of the season.
NOTABLES
-Joe Tietjen finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Pete Guy tallied his team-leading sixth home run in the win. Lucas Owens and Carmine Pagano each finished with two hits, including a triple apiece.
-The Bulldogs jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when Danny Wilson doubled to lead off the frame before Guy belted his two-run homer to center field. Asheville added to the lead with a single run in the second inning, using a Teitjen RBI single back up the middle.
-The third inning saw Asheville tallied two hits and score the three runs, but the Bulldogs had an opportunity for a bigger inning, leaving the bases loaded to end the frame. Pagano and Owens both drove in a run with their triples, while the third run of the inning scored via a Mt. St. Mary's wild pitch.
-The visitor's only scoring inning came in the top of the fourth, when Mt. St. Mary's strung together three hits to open the frame, including an RBI single, before a sacrifice fly also plated a run.
-Asheville finished the game's scoring with a two-run seventh inning that was aided by a Mt. St. Mary's error. Tietjen sent an RBI double into left field before Guy scored the final run of the afternoon later in the inning on a passed ball.
UP NEXT
-Following today's win, Asheville closes the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., with freshman left-hander Jordan Carr scheduled to get the start for the Bulldogs, while Chad Diehl (Sr. LHP) is slated to start for Mt. St. Mary's.
