JOHNSON CITY, TN – UNC Asheville was held hitless through six innings on the way to a 9-1 loss Wednesday night as host ETSU collected 16 hits.
THE TURNING POINT
The Bulldogs left 10 men stranded on the base paths in the loss, leaving at least one runner stranded in seven different innings. Asheville left two men on in the eighth inning and the game ended with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
NOTABLES
-Kyle Carruthers tallied a double in the seventh inning, one of four Asheville hits, as Lucas Owens, Jake Madole and Carmine Pagano had the other three Bulldog hits.
-Joe Tietjen (0-3) drove in the only Asheville run with his sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning. Danny Wilson drew two of the five total Bulldog walks.
-ETSU scored at least one run in five different innings, including two three-run frames in the fourth and sixth innings. The hosts scored a single run in the third on an RBI double before a three-run homer in the fourth inning extended the lead.
-Another home run, this time a solo homer, added to the ETSU lead in the fifth before they added three in the sixth inning – two on a triple and a third on a wild pitch.
-Asheville's lone run came in the top of the eighth inning when Danny Wilson drew a one-out walk and pinch runner Scott Kobos advanced around the bases to third and scored on Tietjen's RBI sacrifice fly into left field.
-ESTU closed the game's scoring in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI triple, one of eight extra-base hits in the game for the hosts.
-Corey Randall was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on four hits in three innings for Asheville.

-Following today's loss, Asheville returns home to host Mt. St. Mary's this weekend at Greenwood Field. Friday's opening game will be a 3:00 p.m. first pitch while both Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 1:00 p.m.
