SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Asheville tallied 22 total hits on Saturday afternoon in a 19-4 victory over Rider University in Spartanburg. The Bulldogs received multiple hits from nine different players on the way to racking up 18 RBI in the win.

 

THE TURNING POINT

The Bulldogs jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first inning, followed by a quick first inning from starter Jordan Fulbright to get the Asheville bats right back to the plate. Asheville went on to score three more runs in the second inning before a seven-run third frame.

 

NOTABLES

-Pete Guy had two home runs for the second day in a row as he finished the afternoon 2-for-2 with four RBI, five runs scored and four walks.

 

-Joe Tietjen (4-6) also had a home run as part of his three RBI game, while Joe Zayatz (three hits, two doubles) and Danny Wilson (two hits) each drive in three runs apiece.

 

-Erik Connolly (double, two RBI), Lucas Owens (double, RBI), Derek Smith (double) Kyle Carruthers (RBI) and Jake Madole (RBI) all finished with two hits in the win.

 

-Fulbright earned his first victory of the season, tossing six complete innings and allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out six Rider batters. Nick Boyles, Brett Hyers and Austin Fahr combined to finish the final three innings out of the bullpen, striking out three total batters.

On the game – “Jordan Fulbright gave us a quality start and we were able to jump on their starter early. Pete Guy got us going with a three-run home in the first inning and we never looked back. We need to continue to clean up our defense and get better out of the bullpen.”
