CHARLOTTE, N.C. –UNC Asheville guard Dylan Smith has been named the Big South Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the conference announced this afternoon. Smith was also named College Sports Madness' Big South Player of the Week earlier in the day on Monday.

The Big South Freshman of the Week honor is the first of the year for Smith, who has now been named College Sports Madness' Player of the Week twice in his first campaign. Smith's recognition as Freshman of the Week by the conference marks the second time a Bulldog freshman has been honored this season, joining Dwayne Sutton.

Smith is at the top of nearly Bulldog offensive category, including points per game (13.1 points per contest), three-point shooting percentage (40.2 percent) and free throw shooting percentage (81.0 percent).

The freshman finished with 15-plus points in all three contests dating back to December 29 against Furman, including a 20-point night and the game-winning bucket against the Paladins. Smith also notched 20 points in the Big South Conference road win at Longwood, and collected a total of 56 points on 16-of-39 shooting in the three victories.

Smith and the Bulldogs are now 10-3 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in Big South Conference play. They continue play on Wednesday night with a 7:00 p.m. contest against conference rival Winthrop at home inside Kimmel Arena.
