ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team saw visiting High Point come to town on a wet and rainy Sunday to open Big South Conference play, with the visitors handing Asheville a 3-0 loss to open the conference schedule.
THE TURNING POINT
Up 1-0 late in the second half, High Point was able to notch two late goals two minutes apart – in the 81st and 83rd minutes – to put the game out of reach.
NOTABLES
-Zach Compton had an Asheville team-high two shots, both on goal, in the loss.
-Goalkeeper Zak Davis faced 26 total shots (14 on goal) and made 11 saves.
-Asheville now has a 6-19-2 record all-time against High Point. High Point has won the teams' last three matchups.
-The Bulldogs are now 0-5 in Big South Conference opening games over the last five seasons. The last time Asheville opened Big South Conference play with a victory was in the 2011 season when they beat Radford 1-0 in overtime on the road.
QUOTABLES
“We were obviously disappointed in the outcome but I am very pleased with several moments we had; I thought we were very good in the second half. Give credit to High Point, we gave them an opportunity to counter attack us in the second half and they were able to get the second goal. I think the game was a little closer than the final score line. There were a lot of positives for us, but the biggest thing is we have to find a way to start matches better. We didn't offer enough in the game early to give ourselves good footing and play the way we wanted to play. Not too much time to rest with Radford coming Wednesday. A little disappointed in the result but we have a lot of opportunities to put ourselves in chances where we want to get to.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell
UP NEXT
-Asheville goes right back out on the road for three matches following today's game. The Bulldogs will take on Big South foes Radford (Sept. 30) and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 3), and also will play regional rival Appalachian State (Oct. 6) before returning home to face Coastal Carolina on October 10.
