BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State saw an early first half goal hold up on Tuesday night, with the Mountaineers defeated the UNC Asheville men's soccer team as the Bulldogs stepped out of conference play to tangle with their mountain foe.

THE TURNING POINT

Appalachian State notched what turned out to be the night's only goal in the 16th minute via a long pass and header in front of the net to score.

NOTABLES

-Zach Joens finished with two of Asheville's five shots, with three other Bulldogs tallying one shot each.

-Redshirt freshman Tyler Moore made his first start of the season for the Bulldogs, facing 10 total shots (four on goal) and making two saves.

-Both teams finished with three shots in the first half, but the hosts notched seven shots in the second 45 minutes compared to Asheville's two shots.

QUOTABLES

“Appalachian State did a very good job and was very physical, making it tough to play. They scored that early goal off a set piece but after that I thought we picked up our intensity and found our footing in the game. Unfortunately the damage had already been done. We had a couple chances late. We have to be sharper in the final third and I thought we got a little away from our process in terms of passing the ball as much as we'd like to, and full credit to App State. They unbalanced us and turned tonight into a more direct, physical match. Part of our process is continuing to improve, and I thought we did improve in some areas we have been working on. Now we have a big opportunity and test with Coastal Carolina coming in on Saturday. It's going to be a great opportunity for our guys to play against one of the best teams in the country on our home field. We will get back to training tomorrow and see if we can't continue to move our process forward.” - Head Coach Mathes Mennell

UP NEXT
