ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's tennis secured a season-opening 6-1 victory over Mars Hill University on Friday after at the Asheville Racquet Club.
The win marks two seasons in a row where Asheville (1-0) starts the season with a victory over the Lions.
“Everyone is always a little on edge and a little nervous during the first match because they haven't played a match in a while, but I thought they did well today,” said head coach Lise Gregory. "I thought they did a good job of setting up the points and being patient. In doubles I felt we did pretty well overall. We didn't have [Emily McNall] in the lineup so that would be number one doubles so we had to move some people around. We've got another one tomorrow so that should continue to help us get back in the swing of things.”
The duo of Christine Boissevain and Lauren Brooker took the No. 1 flight for the Bulldogs, 6-2, while Caroline Sherrer and Erika Rivero also easaed past the Mars Hill pairing at No. 2, 6-2. The Blue & White also grabbed a 6-3 decision on court two where Amryn Soldier and Hunter Hall grabbed a 6-3 win.
In singles play, freshman Amalie Davidson topped Juliana Fisher at No. 4 6-0, 6-1 while Amryn Soldier cruised to victory over Jade Henke 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Lauren Brooker secured the victory for the Bulldogs, defeating Luz Heilman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
After securing victory, the two teams played out the final matches with Hunter Hall grabbing 6-0, 6-0 victory over Natalie Hilbig at No. 5. Mars Hill grabbed its only point of the match on court No. 2 where Jasha Gerrdink rallied back to defeat Christine Boissevain 2-6, 7-6, 10-8. The match concluded at the top flight where Erika Rivero downed Lucy McLaurin 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.
