CLINTON, S.C. – Paul Egle scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute as UNC Asheville downed Presbyterian College 1-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night PC Soccer Stadium.
The victory by the Bulldogs (4-8-3, 2-4-2 BSC) qualified them for next week's Big South Conference championship. It was Asheville's third straight victory, the first time the Dogs have won that many in a row since the 2003 season.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson earned his second straight shutout for Asheville. He made six saves for the Blue & White, including a brilliant save right before the Bulldogs scored their only goal of the match.
"I'm really happy for the players to have secured qualification to the Big South Tournament next week," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. "I was very impressed with the attitude of PC and thought they were very dangerous. While we did not play our best tonight, the guys found a way to grind it out. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing at Campbell on Saturday!
The winning goal came when Jack Huber was pulled down in the box, and the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick.
Egle calmly scored his fourth goal of the season on the PK at 82:37 to give the Bulldogs the goal they would need to win their first road game of the year.
The senior defender has scored in three consecutive games and is a perfect 2-of-2 on PK's this year.
UNC Asheville finishes the regular season this Saturday night when the Bulldogs play at Campbell starting at 6 p.m.
