ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Pierrria Henry's three-pointer as the buzzer sounded gave Charlotte a 66-63 overtime victory over UNC Asheville at Kimmel Arena Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the Bulldogs' (2-4) third straight, while the 49ers' (4-2) win ended a two-game losing streak.
The defeat spoiled a brilliant effort by Asheville guard Andrew Rowsey who scored a game-high 27 points. The nation's leading scorer went 9-of-22 from the field and knocked down six 3-pointers. Bulldog center Jaleel Roberts had a double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds and a career-best 10 blocked shots. His 10 blocks tied the school record set by Asheville center Kenny George against Campbell in the 2007-08 season.
David Robertson added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Freshman Kevin Vannatta contributed five assists.
Charlotte was led by Braxton Ogbueze with 15 points, while Mike Thorne, Jr. added 12 points and 18 rebounds. Willie Clayton finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Asheville trailed 63-61 when Rowsey fed freshman Kem Ubaru for a lay-up at the seven-second mark to tie the game at 63-63.
The 49ers quickly came down court and Henry's trey from the top of the circle went through the net as the buzzer sounded giving Charlotte the road victory. It was the 49ers' first game on the UNC Asheville campus in 44 years.
Both teams had a chance to win at the end of regulation. With the game tied at 55-55, Asheville had the ball with 13 seconds left and played for the final shot. But a turnover with seven seconds left turned the ball back to Charlotte. The 49ers got the ball to Henry who tried to score in the lane but his last-second shot was rejected by Roberts and the game went to overtime.
Charlotte held a 54-43 rebounding advantage and outscored the Bulldogs, 27-7 on second-chance points.
UNC Asheville is back in action next Sunday (Dec. 7) afternoon against Limestone at 2 p.m.
