UNC Asheville Travels to VMI & Liberty
02.01.2012 | Men's Basketball
The Bulldogs (16-7, 11-1 BSC) travel to VMI Thursday night at 7 p.m. and then finish the swing at Liberty Saturday evening, also at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WWNC (570-AM) with the pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be a video-stream of both games that can be accessed at www.uncabulldogs.com. A free audio stream of the game can be found at www.uncabulldogs.com.
Asheville is unbeaten this year on the road in league play at 6-0 but head coach Eddie Biedenbach knows the Bulldogs have two tough challenges this weekend starting with the high-scoring Keydets (11-10, 6-5 BSC) on Thursday night. VMI has not lost a home game at Cameron Hall this season and will bring a 9-0 record into its game with Asheville. The Bulldogs downed the Keydets at Kimmel back on Jan. 5, 94-85.
"We've got our hands full with the next two games," stated Biedenbach. "VMI is tough to beat anywhere but they're especially tough at home. They have a good team that gave us fits in Asheville earlier this season."
The Bulldogs led from start to finish on Jan. 5 but never could put VMI away until late in the game. Matt Dickey scored a then season-high 23 points, while J.P. Primm added 21 points.
The Keydets are second in the nation in scoring with an 83.3 average. The Bulldogs are third nationally at 83.1. VMI is led in scoring by Keith Gabriel's 18.2 average, while Stan Okoye has 17.4 mark.
Asheville continues to be led by its senior guards in Matt Dickey and J.P. Primm. Dickey has a 16.7 scoring average, while Primm is at 16.3 points per game. Both have scored more than 1,500 career points and for just the second time in Big South history does one team have two 1,500-point scorers playing for them.
The Bulldogs enter the VMI games with wins in 10 of their last 11 games. Asheville has won its last eight road games against BSC teams dating back to last season.
BULLDOG NOTES
Asheville is ranked ninth nationally in assists with a 17.1 per game average and eighth in field goal percentage with a .494 mark.
The Bulldogs have had three different players score at least 30 points in a game this year in Chris Stephenson, J.P. Primm and Matt Dickey. It marks the first time in the Division I era that three different players have scored 30 points in a game in the same season.
Asheville has scored at least 86 points in eight of the last nine games.
Six different players have led the Bulldogs in scoring this year.
Jeremy Atkinson has led Asheville in rebounding in six straight games, averaging 8.2 rebounds per contest.
The Bulldogs are 17-1 in their last 18 games against BSC opponents.
J.P. Primm has scored at least 23 points in four of the last five games.
Asheville has won its last four games at Cameron Hall but two of those wins came in overtime. Ironically, VMI has won four of its last six games in Asheville.
Quinard Jackson is 7-for-7 from the three-point line in BSC games.
The Bulldogs next BSC win will set a school record for league victories. Asheville has won 11 games three different times: 1998 (11-1), 2010 (11-7), 2011 (11-7).
Asheville had three different players - Matt Dickey (31), J.P. Primm (23) and Jeremy Atkinson (20) - score 20 points or more against Campbell on Saturday. That's the first time that's happened this season.
