ASHEVILLE. N.C. - The UNC Asheville Bulldogs found out their opponent for the ESPN's Sears Bracketbuster series on Monday night. ESPN announced that Asheville will travel to Ohio University of the Mid-American Athletic Conference on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Bobcats own a record of 17-4 so far this season and are 5-2 in the MAC. They had a four-game winning streak going into Monday's action.
"The ESPN Bracketbuster series is a great opportunity for intersectional rivalries," stated Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "Ohio University is an outstanding team that has had a great program for a number of years. They're big and powerful and the game will be a great test for our team."
Asheville's game with Ohio University is one of 13 games that will be televised over the weekend of Feb. 17-19 by the family of networks by ESPN.
The entire Big South Conference will be participating in the event.
"I believe the Bracketbusters series is going to show just how good and deep the Big South Conference is this season," commented Biedenbach.
The game will take place in Athens, Ohio which is just 20 minutes away from Waterford, Ohio, the hometown of junior center D.J. Cunningham. However, Cunningham is red-shirting this season because of a knee injury.
"We're excited about playing Ohio but I just hate the fact that D.J. Cunningham isn't going to be able to play," said Biedenbach. "That would have been a nice homecoming for him."
The Bulldogs are 1-1 all-time in the Bracketbuster series. They won at Eastern Kentucky in 2006 but fell to Northeastern at home last season.
