Knapp added two assists on the day as Asheville (1-7-0) scored its most goals in a match since a 5-0 victory at VMI in the 2007 season.
"We played very well today," stated Asheville coach Michelle Demko. "We've been getting better and better with each match. Our team lost a tough one on Friday (3-2 to Georgia State) and we're determined to get the job done today.
"I like what we accomplished on offense this afternoon," added Demko. "We kept the pressure on them for most of the match and when we needed to score we did to put the match away. We're looking to build on this victory."
The Bulldogs controlled most of the first half but could not get on the scoreboard until the 31st minute. Freshman Kaitlyn Eckert scored her second goal of the season when she tapped in a pass from Knapp. Carolyn O'Brien was also credited with an assist on the play.
The lead didn't last long. Stephanie Searle connected on a shot from 20 yards out at the 33:08 mark to knot the match at 1-1.
But Asheville came right back and scored the eventual game-winner in the 39th minute. Mary Kate Tucker sent a long ball towards the SCSU goal that Knapp was able to get her foot on and into the net for a 2-1 Bulldog lead at 39:30.
Early in the second half, the visitors controlled play and actually out-shot Asheville 8-7 for the half. But Bulldog goalkeeper Heather Muller made all five of her saves in the second half to keep S.C. State off the scoreboard.
The home team put it away with two goals from Halkiotis in a four-minute stretch. She scored her first on a header off a perfect pass from Ferriss Roberts at 71:10. The senior midfielder added her second goal from Knapp at 75:53.
Knapp finished the scoring off a feed from freshman Margo Flewelling at 82:29.
The Bulldogs out-shot S.C. State 16-9. The visitors had four corner kicks to just one for Asheville.
UNC Asheville plays next at ETSU next Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
