CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the final contest of a three-game series with Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern the UNC Asheville baseball team allowed five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to fall to the Buccaneers, 7-5, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
Outfielders Danny Baatz, Grant Gajdosz and Patrick Koontz each went 2-for-4 at the plate with Baatz and Koontz driving in a run apiece for the Blue & White. Asheville actually out-hit CSU 12-11 but could not overcome the late deficit, falling to 10-17 on the season with a 4-5 mark in conference play.
Leading CSU was senior Matt Still who played at the DH spot in the Bucs' lineup. Still went 3-for-4 on the day that included a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to bolster CSU's lead. The win brings CSU's record to 17-13 (5-4, BSC). That mark being the best start through 30 games in over a decade.
Asheville would break the deadlock in the second inning when Patrick Koontz singled to right field scoring Nick Collazo.
The Bucs would respond with a two run inning in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. CSU first scored on a balk that would bring the base runner home from third and advanced the runner from second to third. A single to right center from first baseman Derek Smith would score Brantley Meier from third base.
The score line would remain at 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning when the Bulldogs would plate a run. Asheville would add two more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-2.
Charleston Southern would respond yet again with a rally in the seventh inning. With two men on base freshman shortstop Alex Tomasovich stung a ball just fair down the third base line, scoring two runs. This was after CSU had already plated a run earlier in the inning on a fielding error by the UNCA second basemen.
The Buccaneers would get out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning with runners on second and third base. Catcher Drew Woodall would throw out a man stealing at second for the first out. Then reliever Tyler Vick would induce a pop out for the second out, and close the inning with a strike out.
CSU would further bolster their lead in the bottom of the eighth with two run homer from designated hitter Still. The senior's second four-bagger of the season gave the Bucs a three run lead at a score of 7-4.
Asheville would threaten to make a comeback in the ninth after scoring a run on a grounder to shortstop, but CSU would record the final out of the game on a fly ball to center field.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Wednesday evening when they will play against non-conference foe Davidson, in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for March 15. First pitch is set to begin at 7 p.m.
