Highlanders Complete Series Sweep Of Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In the second game of a doubleheader and the third of a three game series the Radford baseball team pounded out 10 runs on 18 hits to earn a 10-1 victory over UNC Asheville, completing the series sweep over the Bulldogs after earning a 10-4 win in the first game of the day on Saturday at Greenwood Field.

The Highlanders also took game one of the series 5-0 on Friday afternoon at McCormick Field. With the win Radford improves to 24-15 overall with a 10-5 mark in the Big South Conference. The Highlanders have also beaten the Bulldogs in nine consecutive games.

Asheville could not string any hits together in game two and struggled defensively as well. The Blue & White committed four errors in game two alone, after committing only one error in the previous two contests. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 15-25 on the year with a conference record of 7-11.

Bobby Bolling picked up the win for the Highlanders, improving the 5-2 on the year. Bolling allowed only one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Tommy Houmard took the loss for Asheville, giving up five runs on 11 hits in three and one-thirds innings pitched.

Leftfielder Patrick Koontz went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a triple to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Jordan Lurie went 2-for-4 in game two after tallying four hits in game one.

Third baseman Alex Guerra collected three runs batted in for Radford, while teammates Jeff Kemp and Matt Mack each had two. Leadoff man Matt Hillsinger scored three runs for the Highlanders in the game, going 3-for-5 in the game.

Radford unleashed a 16-hit attack in Saturday's first game. The Highlanders scored three runs in the first inning, and Asheville could get no closer the rest of the game.

Mark Peterson (4-1) earned the win for Radford by pitching 7.1 innings. He scattered 11 hits, allowing four runs, three earned. He struck out six and walked two.

The Highlanders also had three hits and two RBI from Brett Mollenhauer plus three hits from Carl Travers.

Asheville finished the game with 12 hits as Grant Gajdosz and Mike Vaughn had two hits each. The Bulldogs left 11 men on base and hit into two double-plays.

The Bulldogs will be off for exams next week and will resume play on Tuesday, May 3, when they travel to take on the Buccaneers of ETSU. The Bucs earned a 12-5 win over Asheville on March 2 as the Blue & White will look to split the season series with ETSU.
