Bulldogs Drop Series Finale With GWU, 17-7

BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb scored 11 runs in the first and bolted to a 16-0 lead, rapping out 16 hits in a 17-7 win over UNC Asheville Sunday at John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field.
Kyle Paeplow (2-0) worked 5.0 scoreless innings and fanned six to pick up the mound win, scattering four hits in his best start of the season to date, helping Gardner-Webb (14-4, 2-1 Big South) capture the first Big South Conference series of the season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs sen 17 men to the plate in the first, and scored all 11 runs before UNC Asheville (6-12, 1-2 Big South) recorded the first out of the inning. All nine Gardner-Webb players scored at least one run in the frame, as the 'Dogs used six hits, six walks and a hit batter to put the game out of reach the game out of reach early. John Harris' three-run double was the big blow in the inning.
The 'Dogs added two runs in the second on a two-run double by Dusty McFarland, and two runs in the third on an RBI single from Zeke Blanton and an RBI triple by Benji Jackson, and pushed the margin to 16-0 on an RBI double from pinch hitter Danny Yelverton in the fifth.

Tommy Houmard (1-1) took the loss for UNC Asheville in the start, allowing eight runs on four hits and three walks. The visiting Bulldogs used six pitchers in the game.
UNC Asheville got two hits each from Jordan Lurie (2-for-4), MikeVaughn (2-for-5), Grant Gajdosz (2-for-4) and Eli Miller (2-for-4, 2 RBI) on Sunday, and managed 12 hits for the game.
The Bulldogs will hit the road once again this coming Tuesday when they will face Southern Conference foe Appalachian State in a midweek game slated for 3 p.m. Gardner-Webb will play at Western Carolina on Wednesday night in Cullowhee, before returning home next Friday for another key, three-game Big South Conference series against High Point.
