BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Freshman right-hander Ryan Koopman tossed seven innings of three-hit baseball and Cameron Nelson knocked in three runs to lead Campbell over UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at Taylor Field.
The Camels move to 4-2 on the season while Asheville falls to 4-1 with its first loss in the early going.
After Nick Collazo knocked in a run for the Bulldogs in the second, Nelson put the Camels on the board in the bottom half of the inning, doubling in Josh Holskey, who scored three of Campbell's seven runs.
In the bottom of the third, senior Ellis Lowe led off with a double down the leftfield line. After Lowe scored on a Bulldog miscue, junior Kyle Holmstrom plated Tyler Hutchinson with a single through the left side. With one out in the inning, Nelson again came through for the Camels, knocking in Holskey and giving Campbell a 4-1 lead through three frames.
Nelson picked up his third RBI of the game in the fifth with his second double of the game, and junior infielder Ryne Briley added another for Campbell, putting the Camels up 6-1 after five.
Tommy Houmard added a tally in the seventh for the Bulldogs, scoring just the third hit of the day off Koopman. After Joe Turkson collected another insurance run for Campbell in the eighth, Asheville's Mike Vaughn homered to center to lead off the ninth, bringing the Bulldogs within four at 7-3. Despite two more hits for Asheville in the inning, the Bulldogs could not bring another around, falling by that score.
Ryan Dull took the loss for Asheville, posting 4.0 innings on the hill while allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits. The junior right-hander struck out one and walked a batter, falling to 0-1 on the season.
Nelson led the Camels at the plate with a 3-for-5 day, while Lowe was 2-for-5 in the win. Houmard was the only Bulldog to register multiple hits in the loss with a 2-for-4 effort, while Vaughn scored twice for Asheville. The two teams will continue their weekend series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Taylor Field.
