Men's Basketball Set to Face Charleston Southern on Tuesday Night
02.14.2011 | Men's Basketball
Asheville (13-11, 8-6 BSC) is in third place in the latest BSC standings, a full game in front of the Buccaneers (13-14, 7-7 BSC) who are in fifth place. Winthrop is in fourth place at 8-7. The top four finishers in the final league standings get to host a Big South Tournament quarterfinal game on March 1.
The Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 57-54 road decision at Gardner-Webb Saturday night. Matt Dickey scored 18 points to lead Asheville. He also had six assists and six rebounds. J.P. Primm added 10 points and four assists. The 57 points marked the lowest amount of points Asheville had scored in a victory this year.
"We found a way to win against Gardner-Webb without playing very well on offense," commented Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "However, our guys did a great job on defense the whole way. We're going to need that kind of defensive performance the rest of the season, and we're especially going to have to play solid defense at Charleston Southern Tuesday night."
Asheville slipped past the Buccaneers at Justice Center on Jan. 22, 77-69. The Bulldogs paced five players in double figures in the victory but need six points late from Jaron Lane to hold off CSU.
"We played pretty well against Charleston Southern the last time, but we needed everything to come out of that game with a victory," commented Biedenbach. "Charleston Southern has played very well at home this year, and I expect an extremely tough game with them Tuesday night."
The Bulldogs are being led in scoring by junior guard Matt Dickey with a 15.0 average. J.P. Primm is right behind him with a 14.9 scoring average.
Charleston Southern is led by senior guard Jamarco Warren with a 16.4 average. He has knocked 66 treys on the year and is shooting an amazing 86.3 percent (88-102) from the free throw line. Forward Kelvin Martin is averaging close to a double-double with a 12.1 scoring and 9.1 rebounding average.
BULLDOG NOTES
UNC Asheville is 5-2 in Big South Conference road games this year. The Bulldogs will have a winning season in league road play for the first time since the 2007-08 team went 4-3. The five road conference wins is the most by an Asheville team since the 1997-98 team went 5-1.
The 57 points is the lowest number of points Asheville has scored this year in a victory. The previous low was 68, also against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 15
The Bulldogs are 9-15 at the CSU Fieldhouse since joining the Big South Conference. Asheville lost eight straight games here from 1988 through 1995. The Bulldogs have played a little better here over the past few years as they have won five of their last seven meetings here. However, CSU prevailed in last year's contest, 62-54.
Matt Dickey has scored in double figures in nine of the last 10 games. In the past two games, he has led Asheville with six assists in each contest.
The Bulldogs will put three 1,000-point career scorers on the floor tonight. They are senior forward John Williams (1,073), Matt Dickey (1,057) and J.P. Primm (1,026).
