Asheville (9-10, 2-5 BSC) ended a three-game losing streak in impressive fashion on Saturday with a hard-fought 60-59 road victory at Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs had won four straight and led by 13 early in the first half only to see Asheville rally in the second half to pull out the win. Kendall Shepard led the comeback victory with 18 points. Lindsey Montgomery posted a double-double for the visitors as she scored 12 points and collected 13 rebounds. Lindsey Thompson added 11 points as she connected on three 3-pointers in the second half. Breaira Barksdale chipped in nine points, all in the second half. She also had five steals and four assists.
"Saturday's game was our best defensive effort of the year," stated Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "We didn't panic when we got down early as we clawed our way back in the game. Everyone played well and contributed to the win. Hopefully this game will give some confidence as we beat a very good Gardner-Webb team on the road."
The Bulldogs didn't have much time to enjoy the win as Asheville faces Presbyterian College (5-14, 2-5) on the road Monday evening.
"Presbyterian College has played everyone tough this year and lost some close games," declared Blose. "We're going to need another great effort Monday night to get a road win."
Kendall Shepard leads Asheville in scoring with a 14.9 scoring average. Lindsey Montgomery is averaging 13.2 points per game, while Lindsey Thompson has a 12.5 average. Kelli Riles continues to be averaging a double-double with an 11.7 scoring and 10.4 rebounding average.
Bulldog Notes
The teams split last season. PC won in Clinton, 65-54. Asheville rallied for a 66-59 victory later in the season.
The Bulldogs are 5-3 on the road this year but just 4-7 at home. Asheville enters Monday night's game with wins in four of its last five road games. The five road victories are the most by a Bulldog team since the 2006-07 team won seven.
Asheville won on Saturday at Gardner-Webb despite a season-low six points and one rebound from Kelli Riles.
The Bulldogs will play Presbyterian College at Justice Center on Saturday, Feb. 12 and that game will be televised locally by WMYA-TV starting at 2 p.m.
Asheville's 60 points on Saturday was the lowest point total for a Bulldog team in a victory this season.
