JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State pitchers Kerry Doane and Chas Byrne combined for seven shutout innings while only allowing four Bulldogs to reach base as the Buccaneers completed a doubleheader sweep of UNC Asheville with an 11-0 victory at Cardinal Park on Wednesday night.

Byrne was credited with the win in a relief appearance to improve to 3-6 for ETSU while the Bucs improve to 29-21 overall. Asheville could not get anything going on offense in the seven-inning loss as the Bulldogs fall to 12-31 on the season.

Centerfielder Matthew Scruggs went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot with a home run and three runs batted in with fellow Buccaneer Paul Hoilman going 2-for-4 with a homer and a pair of RBI. Five different Bucs collected two hits with nine players notching at least one for ETSU.

Grier Harrington (1-3) took the loss for UNC Asheville allowing eight runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.

The Bulldogs had a chance to take an early lead after they led the game off with a pair of singles by Catlin Carter and Danny Baatz followed by a sacrifice bunt by Justin Schumer that advanced both runners into scoring position. But Asheville could not convert the opportunity as the next two batters recorded the final two outs of the inning.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when ETSU posted three runs to take the early lead. The Buccaneers would then post eight runs over the next three innings highlighted by a five-run fourth inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead.

That would be the final in game two as the Buccaneers swept the doubleheader with UNC Asheville.

The Bulldogs will host non-conference opponent Appalachian State on Wednesday at historic McCormick Field in a game set to begin at 1 p.m. This will be the first home game for Asheville since April 18 when the Bulldogs hosted Big South Conference foe Winthrop.
