ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Ryan Stetson drove in five runs to help lead Appalachian State to a 12-2 win over UNC Asheville 12-2 in non-conference baseball action at McCormick Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (32-12-1) also got great starting pitching from Ryan Arrowood (6-3) who limited the Bulldogs to just four hits and one run in 5.2 innings of work.
Asheville (12-32) was led at the plate by sophomore Derrick Hopkins who went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the second inning. Bulldog starter David Ricker walked three straight ASU hitters with one out to load the bases. With two outs, Stetson hit a grand-slam home run over the left-field wall for a 4-0 Mountaineer lead. It was his fourth home run of the season and ASU's first grand-slam of the year.
The Apps picked up three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0. Stetson drove in his fifth run of the game on a run-scoring. ASU picked up another run on a wild pitch and a ground-out.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the sixth inning. Justin Schumer had a one-out double. He came home on Hopkins' RBI-single to cut the lead to 8-1.
ASU padded the lead in the eighth with four more runs. Pinch-hitter Chris Trappy delivered a two-run double.
Asheville scored once more in the bottom of the eighth as C.A. Clayton punched a run-scoring single to score Mike Vaughn.
UNC Asheville begins a crucial Big South Conference series with Charleston Southern this Friday afternoon at McCormick Field starting at 1 p.m.
