GREENVILLE, S.C. - Catlin Carter and Mike Vaughn drove in four runs each as UNC Asheville routed Furman 14-2 Wednesday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.

The Bulldogs (12-26) scored eight runs in the first inning and then coasted from there behind the solid starting pitching of Grier Harrington. The junior right-hander earned his first win of the year to improve his record to 1-3. Harrington pitched seven innings, allowing just one unearned run and four hits.

Asheville started quickly in the first. Carter opened the game with a hit and two walks sandwiched around a ground-out to load the bases for Vaughn. The junior right-fielder then hit a grand-slam home run to get the Bulldogs in front. 4-0.

Asheville kept adding runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Jordan Lurie doubled down the right-field line to pad the lead to 6-0. Carter picked up his first RBI on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0. A run-scoring single scored Lurie to put the visitors in front, 8-0.

Furman's relief pitching kept the Bulldogs at eight runs for the next six innings. But the Paladins were kept in check by Harrington. Furman finally got an unearned run in the  to cutsixth the lead to 8-1.

The Bulldogs picked up some insurance runs with two in the seventh to push the lead to 10-1. Asheville added four runs in the eighth as Carter had a two-run double for the key hit of the inning.

Beau Zinman went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Justin Schumer chipped in three hits and scored two runs.

UNC Asheville plays next at #4 Coastal Carolina as the Bulldogs and Chanticleers begin a three-game Big South series Friday starting at 6 p.m.
