Men's Basketball Travels to Georgetown on Saturday
11.26.2010 | Men's Basketball
Asheville (2-2) is in the middle of a five-game road trip that started at UNC Chapel Hill Tuesday night where a gallant comeback fell just short as the Bulldogs lost to the Tar Heels, 80-69.
Eddie Biedenbach's team faces a very good Georgetown team that is unbeaten on the year at 5-0. The Hoyas won the Charleston Classic last weekend in Charleston, S.C., winning all three games handily, including an 82-67 victory over N.C. State in the championship game last Sunday.
"We've got another tough assignment in Georgetown," commented Biedenbach. "I've very impressed with them from watching them on film. They play great defense and can beat you offensively in a lot of different ways. We're going to get a very tough test on Saturday but this is a game that will make us better in the long run."
Georgetown is led by senior guard Austin Freeman with a 17.8 scoring average. Sophomore guard Jason Wright averages 15.8 points per game. The Hoyas won all three games in Charleston by an average of 16 points.
The Bulldogs continue the road swing Monday night at USC Upstate and then open Big South Conference play next weekend at Radford (Dec. 2) and High Point (Dec. 4).
Asheville battled hard against the Tar Heels and out-scored them in the second half 38-36 but a 22-point deficit early in the second half was just too far to come back from.
"We really competed at Chapel Hill, and I'm proud of our guys for battling back the way they did," said Biedenbach. "If we could have just gotten a few more rebounds, gotten back on defense a little quicker and made a couple more shots then we really could have made things interesting down the stretch."
Matt Dickey continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with an 18.8 average. J.P. Primm has a 16.5 scoring average with 19 assists. Jaron Lane and D.J. Cunningham are next at 10.0 points per game.
BULLDOG NOTES
This is the first time UNC Asheville has ever faced Georgetown. The Bulldogs are 0-10 all-time against teams from the Big East. Asheville's last game against a Big East foe came on Dec. 30, 2006 when the Bulldogs lost at Louisville, 66-51.
Eddie Biedenbach has 198 wins as Asheville's head coach. He is the Big South's all-time leader in overall victories and Big South Conference wins (119).
Senior forward John Williams is doubtful for the Georgetown game with an injury.
The Bulldogs have out-scored all four of their opponents in the second half. They have out-scored teams in the second half this season 46.0 to 28.7
Asheville is fifth in the nation in steals (12.7) and have accumulated 51 on the season.
The Bulldogs made just 10 turnovers at UNC Chapel Hill, just two in the second half.
