ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team began preparations for the 2010-11 season with two practices each this past Saturday and Sunday.

The Bulldogs return four starters and 11 lettermen from last year's team. Asheville went 15-16 a year ago and finished in fourth place in the Big South Conference standings with an 11-7 record. Eddie Biedenbach's was picked to finish third in the Big South Conference this year by the league's coaches and media last week.

"We had a good weekend of workouts," stated Biedenbach. "Our guys have come back in shape and are ready to go.

"Obviously there's a lot to work on but we're in the right frame of mind, trying to get better with each day," added Biedenbach.

The Bulldogs return a veteran team to the court this year. Asheville has four starters and 11 lettermen back.

I believe we have the makings of a high-quality basketball team that can compete for a championship," added Biedenbach. "We need to be injury-free at certain positions, and we also need for some of our younger players to step up and make an impact."

The Bulldogs are working hard for a season that is coming fast. Asheville hosts Belmont Abbey in its only exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 8 before opening the 2010-11 season at Auburn on Nov. 12. The Bulldogs games with the Tigers will be the first ever at Auburn Arena. Asheville's first regular-season home game is with Virginia Intermont on Nov. 20. Seven of the Bulldogs first eight games are away from home, including dates at UNC Chapel Hill (Nov. 23) and Georgetown (Nov. 27).

"We're going to have to road warriors early in the season," explained Biedenbach. "It's a tough schedule but this should prepare us for Big South Conference play."

The Bulldogs open league play on Dec. 2 at Radford and follow that up with a game at High Point on Dec. 4.
