09.21.2009 | Women's Soccer
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - UNC Asheville and Western Carolina battled for 110 minutes but each team could not score as the mountain rivals settled for a 0-0 tie in the second day of the Catamount Classic.
Bulldog goalkeeper Veronica Lazar and an aggressive Asheville defense were able to keep the high-powered Catamount offense off the scoreboard on Sunday. The Bulldogs are now 3-3-1 on the season and earned their first point against WCU since the 1994 season.
Lazar made three saves in the match and earned a spot on the all-tournament team along with sophomore defender Mary Kate Tucker. The shutout was the 12th of Lazar's career at Asheville.
WCU had a 15-8 advantage in shots and 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams was forced to make seven saves in the match.
The Bulldogs almost won the match in the third minute of overtime when freshman Hannah Jeske's shot was just tipped away at the last minute by Williams.
Asheville plays again on Oct. 2 when the Bulldogs open Big South Conference play at defending league champion Radford at 7 p.m.
