Bulldogs Drop Series Opener at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C.?Winthrop jumped out to an early 11-0 lead and held on to take an 11-3 victory over UNC Asheville Friday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
UNC Asheville (8-36, 4-17 Big South) was led by Kevin Weidenbacher who went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Beau Zinman, Danny Baatz, Cody Buch, and Jordan Lurie each had one hit for the Bulldogs.
Eddie Tisdale hit for the cycle for Winthrop (27-18, 14-8 Big South) going 4-for-4 with a solo home run. Matt Thielepape and Sean Sullivan each homered and had four RBI a piece. Winthrop hit three home runs in the first six innings.
The Eagles scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth off Asheville starter Taylor Wohlwend (2-10). Dan Weller came out of the bullpen and allowed a run in the sixth. He went 3.2 innings giving up one run on two hits.
Wade Newman allowed just one hit through six innings and had six strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Eagle pitchers allowed three runs on five hits over the final three innings.
The loss eliminates UNC Asheville from the Big South Tournament that will be held at McCormick Field on from May 19-23.
