UNC Asheville Announces 2010 Baseball Schedule

Comeback Ends a Run Short; Dogs Fall 5-4 at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C.?Winthrop scored four runs in the fourth inning and then held on for a 5-4 victory as UNC Asheville left the tying run on third base in the ninth inning.

Kevin Weidenbacher worked a one out walk in the top of the ninth with Asheville (8-37, 4-18 Big South) trailing 5-3. Beau Zinman hit a slow chopper to shortstop, the throw was wide of first. Both runners moved up a base and the Bulldogs had runners at second and third with one out. Justin Schumer singled to right field scoring Weidenbacher while Zinman was held at third base.

Winthrop (28-18, 15-8 Big South) closer Tyler Mizenko got a strikeout and fielder's choice groundout to escape any further damage to earn his Big South leading 11th save of the season.

Asheville got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Austin Graham who went 3-for-4 on the day. He drove home Mike Vaughn who went 2-for-5 on the afternoon.

Winthrop took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Eddie Tisdale reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a RBI single by Matt Thielepape. Bryn Henderson followed with a RBI double to score Thielepape and Sean Sullivan hit a two-run home run to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead. It was Sullivan's third homer of the year.

Asheville added single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Vaughn singled home Jordan Lurie. In the sixth, Graham scored on a wild pitch but the Bulldogs left the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at second base.

Winthrop went back up by two as John Murrian hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom sixth.

 Lurie and Schumer also had two hits for the Bulldogs as Asheville out-hit Winthrop 13-12 in the game.

Kevin Nolan, Eddie Rohan, Sullivan, and Murrian each had two hits for the Eagles. Winthrop has hit five home runs in the first two games of the series. They added three doubles on Saturday to give them 10 extra base hits for the weekend. UNC Asheville has just two extra base hits in the first two games.

Robert Lake picked up the victory for Winthrop in relief of starter Ken Monteith. Lake threw two innings allowing two hits and one run to improve to 5-3 on the year.

Ryan Dull took the loss for Asheville going five innings allowing five runs on eight hits. He drops to 3-10. Jeremy Hall held Winthrop at bay going three scoreless innings allowing four hits. The Asheville bullpen has allowed just one run in 6.2 innings of the series.

The series will conclude on Sunday. The game has been moved up an hour to a 1 p.m. first pitch.
