ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville pitchers Justin Schumer, Michael Bogaert and Grier Harrington allowed just one run on two hits as the Bulldogs defeated Furman 4-1 Wednesday evening at McCormick Field.
Reed Kreiser led off the bottom of the second inning with a double that hit the middle of the centerfield wall. A single from Mike Vaughn moved Kreiser to third base; however, Kreiser was picked off of at third by Furman catcher Matt Hemingway. Catlin Carter grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Kreiser reached second base again in the bottom of the fifth after Paladin third baseman Brian Harrison misplayed a sharply hit ground ball. Vaughn gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with a mammoth home run over the leftfield wall. It was Vaughn's second home run of the season.
In the bottom of the seventh, Vaughn reached first after getting walked by relief pitcher Marc DeDecker. A sacrifice bunt by Carter moved Vaughn to second. Danny Baatz got on first base with a bunt single and Vaughn advanced to third. A pickoff attempt by DeDecker got away from the Furman first baseman and Vaughn scored.
The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth after Furman closer Spencer Hale walked Catlin Carter with the bases loaded.
Rose reached first base in the top of the ninth after getting walked by Grier Harrington. Rose later moved to second after a grounder by Brian Harrison. The Bulldogs recorded two outs and the game looked to be over after Hemingway hit a grounder to Jordan Lurie at third base. However, Lurie's throw to first was low and went by Schumer, which allowed Rose to score Furman's only run of the game. A double to centerfield by Reese Wade put two runners in scoring position, but Harrington struck out Will Miller to end the inning and earn his second save of the season.
Schumer was the game's winning pitcher. He is now 1-5 on the season.
Goldsberry (1-4) earns the loss for Furman.
Asheville improves its record to 6-26 overall, while Furman drops to 13-17.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday as they play Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. in the first game of a three-game series starting at 7 p.m.
