Baseball Splits Double Header at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va.?Catlin Carter went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Ryan Dull threw his third consecutive complete game to lead UNC Asheville to a 9-2 victory in game one of its double header at Liberty on Saturday. The Flames came back to win the second game 11-4.
Dull (3-6) allowed just two runs on 10 hits, walked one, and struck out three as he earned his third victory in his last four starts.
The Bulldogs (7-28, 4-13 Big South) jumped out to a 5-0 lead scoring a run in the second inning and four more in the fourth. Reed Kreiser doubled to lead off the second and scored on a RBI single by Carter. In the fourth, it was Kreiser walking to lead off the inning in front of singles by Derrick Hopkins and Carter to load the bases. A RBI single by Jordan Lurie and an error scored two runs. Justin Schumer's two- RBI single scored Kevin Weidenbacher and Lurie.
A solo home run by Tyler Bream in the bottom of the fourth put Liberty (23-11, 11-3 Big South) on the board. A RBI-triple by Curran Redal in the fifth made it 5-2.
Asheville scored an unearned run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to give Dull all the run support he would need. Schumer led off the eighth with double and scored on a RBI single by Mike Vaughn. Vaughn moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Kreiser who went 2-for-4 in the game but was on base four times and scored three runs.
In the nightcap, it was Liberty that jumped on top early 7-0 after three innings. Liberty got three runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-RBI double by John Long. In the third, the Flames scored three unearned runs after Doug Bream led off the inning with a solo home run.
Asheville scored twice in the fourth inning. Schumer led off with a single and scored on a double by Vaughn. Carter delivered a RBI single to score Vaughn. Carter went 2-for-4 in game two giving him six hits and three RBI on the day. He had the only multi-hit game in the finale.
Michael Bogaert (1-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs in the nightcap going five innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits.
UNC Asheville returns to Greenwood Field on Tuesday to face USC Upstate in a 3 p.m. game.
