Bulldogs Drops Opening Game at VMI 6-1

LEXINGTON, Va.?Two solo home runs and a two run triple keyed VMI to a 6-1 victory in the opening game of a three series against UNC Asheville Friday afternoon.

Six of VMI's 11 hits in the game went for extra bases. The Keydets (9-10, 3-0) got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth as Sam Roberts hit his fourth home run of the season with one out on a 1-2 pitch.

Asheville (3-16, 1-5 Big South) tied the game in the top of the sixth. Justin Schumer led off the inning with a single to center field. He moved to second base on a ground out and scored on a RBI single by Cody Buch. Buch has five hits in the last three games.

Tanner Biagini hit his second home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the sixth to give VMI back the lead.

The Keydets put the game out of reach in the seventh inning. Justin Topping and Brian Sandridge had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Jacob Morley followed with RBI-single to plate Topping. One out later, A.J. Yoder connected with a two-RBI triple to put VMI up 5-1.

The Keydets added the final run in the eighth.  Roberts led off with a double, moved to second base on a ground out, and scored on a single by Morley. Morley went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Yoder was also 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

On the mound, Travis Smink (3-2) threw a complete game allowing one run on seven hits. He walked one batter and struck out five Bulldogs. It is the second complete game thrown against the Bulldogs in the last three games.

Taylor Wohlwend (2-5) went seven innings allowing six runs on 10 hits. The sophomore struck out six batters without allowing a walk. Five of the 10 hits he allowed came after the sixth inning.

Danny Baatz went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Asheville had just one extra base hit in the game and has scored 14 runs in its last seven games.

The two teams will battle on Saturday at 2 p.m. Michael Bogaert will pitch for UNC Asheville while Chris Henderson is expected to pitch for VMI.
