Men's Basketball Set to Face VMI on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Bulldogs Shock VMI in Overtime 103-95

LEXINGTON, VA. ? UNC Asheville outscored VMI in overtime 17-9 as the Bulldogs shocked the Big South Conference leaders,103-95 at Cameron Hall Monday night.

The Bulldogs (10-13, 6-6 BSC) were led by senior forward Reid Augst with 23 points. John Williams contributed a career-high 21 points and career-best 15 rebounds. Sean Smith enjoyed his first double-double of his career with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Dickey chipped in 22 points.

Travis Holmes led the Keydets (17-4, 8-2 BSC) with 37 points.

“I am really proud of our guys to get the job done against a great team on the road,” said UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We made some big shots in overtime and played well the whole night."

UNC Asheville hit its first three 3-pointers of the overtime to give the visitors a 97-93 lead. Dickey hit the first two treys and Smith added the other. The Keydets could get no closer than four the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs led 86-84 on a Williams tap-in with 30 seconds left but Holmes tied the game with a short jumper in the lane at the 10-second mark. Asheville had a chance to win at the end of regulation but Augst's shot rimmed out with two seconds left.

Asheville led for most of the first half and led by 10 at 38-28 as Augst scored 18 points in the first 15 minutes. But the Keydets rallied behind Travis Holmes. He scored eight points to lead a 12-2 run to tie the game at halftime 40-40.

Williams was 10-of-12 from the field and blocked three shots. Smith was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs dominated the backboards with a 51-29 advantage. J.P. Primm finished with six assists.

Asheville shot 56 percent from the field (37-of-66).

 The Bulldogs start a three-game homestand Saturday afternoon against Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

NOTES - UNC Asheville had four players score more than 20 points in a game for the first time in school history...Reid Augst has 989 career points...the Bulldogs had two players with double-doubles in John Williams and Sean Smith...John Williams has 97 career blocked shots...Sean Smith moved into 10th place on the school's all-time career list for three-pointers made with 107...Asheville has won 10 of its last 18 Big South Conference road games.
