Bulldogs Face Big South Co-Leader Radford on Saturday

02.13.2009 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's basketball team is back at home Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs face Big South co-leader Radford at Justice Center starting at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WISE Radio (1310-AM) and can be seen via video-streaming for a small fee on The Edge at www.bigsouthsports.com.

UNC Asheville (12-13, 8-6 BSC) has won three straight games after a thrilling 87-78 overtime win over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night. The win moved the Bulldogs into fourth place in the league standings and would allow Asheville to host a Big South Tournament quarterfinal game if the tournament were held today. However, there's two more weeks left in the season.

“The Gardner-Webb was a big game and that was a big win for us,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “However, now Radford becomes a big game. We need to keep winning because if we do that than it doesn't matter what anyone else does behind us.”

Winning against Radford will not be easy. The Highlanders (14-10, 11-2 BSC) have won five straight and 10 of their last 11 games. Included in that streak was a 98-88 Radford overtime win over UNC Asheville on Jan. 10 at Radford. Biedenbach has been impressed with the Highlanders since the season started.

“I thought Radford would be very good this year,” stated Biedenbach. “They have great size inside and are just a solid team. Brad Greenburg is a very good coach and you can see how well-coached they are when you watch them on film. Radford presents a number of problems for us, and we're going to have to be ready to play from the start. We can't fall behind like we have the past two games.”

The Bulldogs have shown the ability to rally from deficits this year. Four of Asheville's last eight wins have come when they've been behind at halftime. The last two games have seen the Bulldogs trail by 12 and 13 points at the half before roaring back to win.

It's nice that we've played hard, battled back and found a way to win but we need to put 40 minutes together,” declared Biedenbach. “If we want to be successful in March, you have to put 40 minutes together.”

Radford is led by 6-11 center and Big South Player of the Year Candidate Artsiom Parakhouski. Parakhouski is averaging 14.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Additionally, the junior center is shooting 51.6 percent (132-of-256) from the field and 70 percent (89-of-127) from the line. 6-8 junior forward Joey Lynch-Flohr averages 13.7 points per game and is shooting 54 percent (122-of-225) from the field. Lynch-Flohr scored 22 points in Radford's win over Asheville on Jan. 10.

The Bulldogs are being led in scoring by senior forward Reid Augst with a 15.7 average. Augst has mirrored Asheville's performance the last two games. He did not score in the first half against Charleston Southern last Saturday, but exploded for 19 points in the second half of the 80-71 win. On Wednesday against Gardner-Webb, Augst was held to two points in the first half before tallying 25 points in the second half and finishing with 28 points for the game.

John Williams is averaging 12 points per game and tops the club in rebounding with a 6.8 per game mark. Freshman guard Matt Dickey continues his good play with a 10.5 scoring average.
