Men's Basketball Hosts Gardner-Webb Wednesday Night
02.10.2009 | Men's Basketball
Wednesday night's game is a crucial one for both teams. The Bulldogs (11-13, 7-6 BSC) have won two straight and are tied for fourth place in the league standings with both Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb (11-12, 7-6 BSC). UNC Asheville would like to host a Big South Conference Tournament quarterfinal game on March 3 as the top four finishers in league play get to host that game. Presbyterian isn't eligible for the tournament this year.
“We would really like to host a game in the tournament but we have a lot of work do before we can worry about the Big South Tournament,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We've had two nice wins but we're going to face a very tough Gardner-Webb team Wednesday night.”
The teams played for the first time since the 1984-85 season back on Jan. 7 at Gardner-Webb.
“We did a nice job in the second half down at Gardner-Webb,” said Biedenbach. “We got contributions from a lot of different players and played much better defense in the second half than we did in the first half. However, we're going to need to play 40 minutes against Gardner-Webb this time around.”
Gardner-Webb is led in scoring this year by guard Grayson Flittner with a 16.5 average. He tops the team in three-point shooting with 62 treys. Aaron Linn is averaging 14.6 points per game. The Runnin' Bulldogs have won three of their last five games but fell at VMI Saturday 94-88.
