ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville placed five players in double figures and led from start to finish as the Bulldogs coasted to a 100-49 victory over visiting Montreat at Justice Center Sunday afternoon.
Asheville (2-6) was led by senior guard Sean Smith with 18 points. He went 5-of-9 from the three-point line. Junior guard J.P. Primm finished with 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. John Williams added 11 points, while Chris Stephenson and Quinard Jackson pumped in 10 points each.
The Cavaliers, playing their second game in two days, did not have a player score in double figures and shot just 29 percent from the field (17-of-58). Montreat (2-11) was led by Seth Moore with eight points and six rebounds.
"We played pretty well considering we were just coming off exams," commented Bulldog coach Eddie Biedenbach. "I thought we got contributions from everyone and it was nice to play everybody.
"However, the game was far from perfect," added Biedenbach. "Montreat played yesterday and missed some shots that they normally would make. We need to play a little better on defense and play hard for 40 minutes."
The victory was the biggest for the Bulldogs in more than 20 years. Asheville's last win by more than 50 points came on Nov. 25, 1988 when the Bulldogs beat Voorhees by 59 points, 103-44.
Smith and Primm had 11 points each in the opening half as Asheville raced to a 50-23 halftime lead. The home team shot a season-high 51 percent (18-of-35) from the field and knocked down four of their first five three-point attempts. Smith had three treys in the opening half.
The second half turned into a foul-fest as 30 fouls were called, 15 on each team. Montreat went 8-of-15 from the charity stripe in the second half, while the Bulldogs were 18-of-29 from the line.
The home team went 28-of-44 from the free throw line for the game for 64 percent.
"It was nice to shoot a lot of free throws for a chance but we've got to a better job of making them," said Biedenbach. "We're a better free throw shooting team then we've showed today and this year."
Freshman center D.J. Cunningham just missed a double-double for Asheville with nine points and nine rebounds. He also blocked five shots. The Bulldogs blocked a season-high 13 shots.
Asheville held a 58-32 advantage on the boards with a 32-10 advantage in the second half.
UNC Asheville hosts NCAA Division II power Catawba Tuesday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m.
