Bulldogs Drop Consolation Game to Marshall

Winthrop Rallies Past UNC Asheville 56-47

01.31.2009 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Ashley Fann scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Winthrop to a 56-47 Big South Conference victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Justice Center.

The Eagles (8-11, 3-4 BSC) out-scored the Bulldogs (7-14, 4-4 BSC) 31-12 in the second half to pick up the road win.

UNC Asheville was led by senior guard Ana Baker with 19 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Baker now has 243 career steals and needs just two to pass Vicki Giffin (244) to become the school's all-time leader in that category.

Lindsey Montgomery added 11 points and eight rebounds for Asheville.

Winthrop got 10 points from Jessica Fansler. Ashley Haughtvedt contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs led by 15 in the first half and 35-25 at halftime as they shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field. In the second, Asheville shot just 17 percent (5-of-29) from the field.

“It was a tale of two halves,” commented UNC Asheville coach Betsy Blose. “We played very well in the first half and not very good in the second half. Give Winthrop credit for hanging in there in the first half and getting the job done in the second half. This is a disappointing loss.”

Asheville led 35-25 at the half and got a bucket from Baker early in the second half to lead 37-25. However, the Bulldogs would not score again for another nine minutes.

The Eagles proceeded to go on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes. Fann scored six points during the run and a trey from Shelly Hankins gave the visitors their first lead of the day at 39-37 at the 13:14 mark.

Both teams failed to score over the next three minutes before Linda Aughburns put Asheville in front 40-39 with a three-pointer at the 10-minute mark. A lay-up from Baker off of a steal pushed the lead back to 42-39.

But the Bulldogs would not score again for another eight minutes and the Eagles would go on a 12-0 run to take control of the game and lead 51-42. Fansler hit back-to-back treys to put Winthrop in front for good at 47-42.

Asheville would close to 52-47 on a jumper from Baker with 50 seconds left, but Winthrop scored the final four points to seal the victory.

The Eagles shot a season-high 50 percent from the three-point line (7-of-14). They went 4-of-6 in the second half. Asheville had a tough day shooting from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs shot just 16 percent (3-of-19).

UNC Asheville plays next at home against Charleston Southern next Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon at 2 p.m. Winthrop travels to Charleston Southern Monday night for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
