01.27.2009 | Men's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's basketball team is home Wednesday night to face defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WISE Radio (1310-AM) and video-streamed for a small fee on The Edge at www.bigsouthsports.com.
The Bulldogs (9-11, 5-4 BSC) broke a two-game losing streak with a 68-58 victory over Presbyterian Saturday night. UNC Asheville trailed 53-46 with eight minutes left but out-scored the Blue Hose 22-5 in the final seven minutes to earn the win.
“Our defense did a great job in the final part of Saturday's game against Presbyterian,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “I thought we executed on offense when had to get the job done.”
The Bulldogs and Eagles are meeting for the second time in 11 days. Winthrop crushed Asheville 87-67 in Rock Hill on Jan. 17. The Eagles jumped out to a 14-2 lead after five minutes and the Bulldogs never really responded.
“We just didn't play well in any phase of the game at Winthrop,” declared Biedenbach. “I thought Winthrop did a great job on both offense and defense and had us on our heels the whole night. We're going to have to play much, much better Wednesday night.”
Winthrop (5-13, 4-5 BSC) is being led in scoring by guard Cameron Stanley with a 10.2 scoring average. Forward Charles Corbin is averaging 10 points per game. Corbin scored 22 points against the Bulldogs on Jan. 17.
“Winthrop is a talented team that has had some tough luck in non-conference games,” said Biedenbach.
The Bulldogs are being led in scoring by senior Reid Augst with a 15.6 average. He has scored in double figures in 17 games this year. John Williams is averaging 11.7 points per game.
