Schumer Hits and Pitches Bulldogs to 6-5 Win Over Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Justin Schumer's home run in the bottom of the 12th inning gave UNC Asheville a 6-5 win over Gardner-Webb at McCormick Field Tuesday night.
Schumer's seventh home run of the season also made him the winning pitcher on the night. The sophomore right-hander pitched four innings in relief to raise his record to 1-5 on the season. He allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two.
Schumer had a great night at the plate, going 4-for-4, with two runs scored and four RBI.
Gardner-Webb (19-21) was led at the plate by first baseman Bubbie Spade who hit two home runs and drove in three runs. Third baseman Justin Loyd went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Kevin Weidenbacher went 3-for-6 for UNC Asheville. Elliott Arrington went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the home team.
UNC Asheville (17-27) trailed 5-2 in the seventh inning but scored twice to cut the Gardner-Webb lead to 5-4. Weidenbacher singled with one out. He moved to second on a passed ball. One out later, Arrington singled Weidenbacher to third. Arrington went to third on a throw. Schumer then carved the lead to 5-4 on a two-run single.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the eighth with some more two-out lightning. Beau Zinman was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a sacrifice. One out later, Weidenbacher's single scored him to knot the game at 5-5.
UNC Asheville scored two runs in the third inning. Arrington doubled with two outs. Schumer followed with a run-scoring single to tie the game at 1-1. Danny Baatz singled Schumer to third. Zinman gave the Bulldogs the lead with a single to push Asheville in front 2-1.
Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the second inning on a run-scoring single from Josh Drewery as the Runnin Bulldogs led 1-0.
With Asheville leading 2-1, Spade hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Johnson pushed GWU in front, 4-2.
Spade homered in the fifth to push the Runnin Bulldog lead to 5-2.
UNC Asheville returns to action Wednesday night at McCormick Field when the Bulldogs host North Carolina A&T starting at 7 p.m.
