Western Carolina (2-4) was led by Lauren Powell and Heather Swayne with 12 points each.  Kriten Feemster had 10 points.

“This is a great victory over a very good Western Carolina team,” stated UNC Asheville coach Betsy Blose. “Our team really came together tonight and played with a lot of energy and got the job done down the stretch. Tonight's win is a big victory for our program.”

The game was close for most of the way until the Bulldogs used a late surge to seal their first win over WCU since the 2005-06 season. Leading 61-59 with eight minutes left, Asheville got two free throws from Montgomery and a jumper from Baker to extend the lead to 65-59. Three more free throws from three different Bulldogs padded the margin to 68-59.

WCU closed to 68-62 before Monroe took over. The senior scored seven of Asheville's next nine points to get the Bulldogs in front 77-64 at the 2:30 mark. The Bulldogs went 8-of-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Asheville controlled the boards 55-44and had 19 second-chance points compared to just four for WCU. The Bulldogs were 27-of-37 from the foul line for 73 percent. The Catamounts shot just 52 percent from the line as they went 13-of-25.

Okoli pulled down eight rebounds. Freshman Linda Aughburns collected seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs trailed by six midway through the first half but recovered behind the play of Baker and Derici. The duo combined for 16 points in the final 10 minutes of the half to give Asheville a 39-36 halftime lead. Derici knocked down two 3-pointers, while Baker hit a 15-footer as the first half buzzer sounded to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead.
