ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Charlotte was too tall and too strong for a determined UNC Asheville women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Justice Center. The 49ers downed the Bulldogs 72-50

Charlotte (6-2) was led by Aysha Jones with 19 points. Senior center Danielle Burgin had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Erin Floyd chipped in 11 points.

UNC Asheville (2-6) was led by sophomore Lindsey Montgomery with a season-high 17 points. She also pulled down nine rebounds, had four steals and blocked two shots.  Chima Okoli added 11 points.

The 49ers controlled the boards with a 54-27 advantage and outscored the Bulldogs 40-24 in the paint. Charlotte's defense limited UNC Asheville to just 31 percent (19-of-61) shooting from the field.

In the first half, the 49ers led the whole way as the Bulldogs were ice cold from the field. Asheville shot just 17 percent (5-of-29) from the field. Charlotte got nine points from Shannon McCaullum to help pus the 49ers to a 30-17 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half and made a 10-4 run to cut the 49er lead to 34-29 on a jumper from Jessica Monroe at the 17-minute mark.

But Charlotte responded with a 16-4 run of their own over the next four minutes to sprint to a 50-31 lead. Burgin sparked the run with eight points.

Asheville could get no closer than 17 the rest of the way as the 49ers picked up their third straight victory.

Montgomery was 7-of-14 from the field. Okoli finished 5-of-9 from the field.

UNC Asheville has the week off for exams. The Bulldogs play again next Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13) against Johnson C. Smith at 2 p.m.
